If you’re considering applying for Nursing Jobs in Massachusetts there are a few factors you’ll want to take into consideration. Landing a nursing job is becoming more difficult as the demand for qualified professionals has increased so have the number of people pursing a career as a nurse. Competition for top level nursing positions is getting more fierce.  It’s not enough to just be a licensed nurse, you need to make sure your qualifications, education, skills and experience separate you from the competition.

The first thing you can do to make this happen is to gain experience. But how do you get experience before you get the job, especially if you’re just starting your career and you’re looking for your first job? The answer…hard work! If you have an idea as to the field  that you would like to work in once you’ve finished school, you need to reach out to a head nurse in that field that is in your area. Introduce yourself, offer to take them out to lunch or coffee.

Understand that these people are extremely busy, so don’t be pushy or press the issue if they are unable to meet with you right away, but don’t give up. Persistence will pay off as long as you don’t annoy anyone. If you are able to get a few minutes with a head nurse tell them your goals and express your sincere (they’ll know if it’s not) desire to work in their field. Ask them what you can be doing while you’re in school to be better prepared once you’re done with school.

During this conversation focus on connecting with the head nurse. Try to find common ground such as a hobby or interest you’re both passionate about. It doesn’t necessarily have to be nursing. Don’t just ask them what they like to do and pretend you like it too. This might seem unimportant but if you want to get your foot in the door it helps if the boss likes you.

Keep in mind that the head nurse you’re talking to was once in your same position. A great question to ask them is how they got their start and if they did anything while they were still in nursing school to improve their chances of employment in their field of choice. You never know, maybe they knew a head nurse that helped them out and got them a part time job as a nurses aid on their unit.

Just something to consider as you begin thinking about Nursing Jobs in Massachusetts or anywhere else.
